Corporación Alta Ley participated in the closing seminar of the T2CM – Tailings to Construction Materials pilot, an initiative that reached Technology Readiness Level TRL 6.
On June 19, Corporación Alta Ley participated in the closing seminar of the T2CM – Tailings to Construction Materials pilot, a technology developed to transform mine tailings into sustainable construction materials.
The event included the participation of David Sepúlveda, Mining Management and Regulation Leader at Alta Ley, who joined the seminar where the main results of the pilot were presented. The pilot plant was capable of processing approximately 1 m³ of tailings per day, enabling the production of artificial aggregate and supplementary cementitious material.
One of the main milestones of the project was reaching Technology Readiness Level TRL 6, through the technical validation of the materials produced, the manufacturing of full-scale prototypes, and the demonstration that the developed products meet the performance requirements established by the construction standards evaluated during the project.
In particular, the pilot considered the Chilean Standard NCh163:2024, an area in which Alta Ley contributed by promoting the inclusion of technical guidelines for the validation of tailings as artificial aggregate.
The initiative was led by T2CM, with the support of DICTUC, which provided the technical structure, experience, and validation capabilities required to bring university research to pilot scale; and BHP, which supported the project with funding and technical accompaniment, helping bring this technology closer to future industrial implementation.
At T2CM, we value Alta Ley’s participation in this process, as well as its contribution to the technical and regulatory discussion needed to advance new ways of valorizing mine tailings in Chile.
